Coaching Staff
The Shenandoah FC Elite Travel Soccer professional technical staff is led by Director, Cosmo Balio, and Technical Director, Desmond Lawless. Along with Goalkeeper Director, Rebecca Toler the leadership is rounded out with many coaches and trainer with a well of collegiate and high school playing and coaching experience. Please read more about this amazing staff on their bio page.

All SFCE Travel Teams are coached by professional coaches with extensive experience. All coaches are employed by the club.

Practice Times / Locations
Travel team practices are typically held on weekday afternoon and evenings on fields located in the Winchester area.

Commitment
Travel team players commit to their team for the entire 2018-19 seasonal year. Travel teams typically practice 3 times a week and play games on weekends throughout the fall and spring season. In addition, teams train without the winter and may have other 'offseason' activities.  Details about each team can be found on the website beginning in early May.

Player Evaluation
The tryout process will occur over several days where players are evaluated based on all pertinent areas of the game for both current performances and predicted future performance. During the process, evaluations from multiple staff coaches will be taken into account in order to select the team. For each team a roster minimum of 10 (U9-U10), 12 (U11-U12) and 16 (U13+) and no more than set roster maximums will be selected.

Team Formation
Teams are formed based on the results of entire age group tryouts.

Player Fees

  • There is no fee to tryout for our club.
  • Participation in the travel program consists of two fees:
  • The SFCE Club Fee varies by age group and team level. This fee addresses technical staff compensation, league registration, field fees, insurance, administration, and other club-related fees.
  • The individual team fee addresses team tournament costs, travel costs and other team-related fees. This fee varies by team.
  • SFCE Club Fees can be found here.

TRAVEL TRYOUT INFORMATION

Tryout Registration

All players (including current players) are REQUIRED to register online.

Tryout Registration will close 24 hours before the first scheduled tryout in an age group.

If you are not able to register within 24 hours of the first scheduled tryout, you should arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the first session to register on site.

Tryout Attendance

It is in the player's best interest to attend as many tryout sessions as possible. You are encouraged, but not required, to attend all tryouts.

SFCE conducts open tryouts. Returning players are required to tryout at the end of each seasonal year in the same manner as players new to the club.

Only players and active technical staff are permitted on the playing surface during the tryout session. Parents who wish to observe a session should remain off the surface.

Playing "Up"
Players must attend the tryouts for their specific birth year. The technical staff will determine if it is appropriate for a player to tryout in an older age group. If a player is interested in trying out for an older age group, please follow this procedure:

Register online for age-appropriate group tryouts. (Make sure to enter in your correct date of birth and all requested information).

Email sfcetryouts@gmail.com with the following information: Player name, date of birth, current team, requested age group. You will be provided a form to complete so the technical staff will be notified of your request.

The appropriate technical staff and AGD (age group director) will be notified of the request.

All players are required to attend at least the FIRST session with their age appropriate age group (even if approved to tryout with an older group).

Players should NOT attend a tryout without appropriate registration as it will further delay the process, and the technical staff will not have your information on their evaluation sheets.

What to Bring to Tryouts

All players should arrive 15-20 minutes prior to each session to check-in and receive their tryout number.

All players (U9 - U19) will be assigned a number and will be given a number to attach to their shorts with safety pins (also provided).

All players should bring the following equipment to each tryout session: Ball, Water for Hydration, Shinguards, Cleats

The staff requests that players not wear any travel uniform jerseys from any club to tryouts.

Player Notification

There is ROLLING NOTIFICATION for players. Players will be notified via email or phone call when a decision has been made about their roster status. At times this notification may be while the tryout process is still ongoing. All players should receive notification of their status within 72 hours after the final scheduled tryout session.

Players requiring a decision regarding their status prior to receiving notification should contact the coach and/or Travel Administrator at sfcetryouts@gmail.comor 540-313-5463.

If a player is offered a spot on the roster, the player is expected to reply within 48 hours to confirm their acceptance of this roster spot and pay their initial installment payment.

If a player has not been contacted about their status after 72 hours after the final scheduled tryout session, please contact sfcetryouts@gmail.com who will direct your email to the appropriate technical staff.

Inclement Weather Information
When the forecast calls for a chance of thunderstorms or inclement weather, please review the information below. An email will be sent to all registered participants and information posted on the SFCE Facebook and Twitter pages if there are any field changes or session cancellations prior to the start of the session. If you are unable to access your email, feel free to call our director at 540-313-5463. Families may want to stay at the field or in the neighborhood if the weather looks threatening in case there is a cancellation during the session. Every effort will be made to hold each tryout session, and players should be prepared to play - even if there are rain showers. However, of course, if there is any lightning or any other conditions which endanger the players, the technical staff may need to suspend a session after it has begun. Safety is paramount. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Player Evaluation - Feedback
SFCE understands that the tryout process is very stressful for players and families, and sometimes the outcome is not what a young player may have hoped for. The SFCE Technical Leadership shares this informational document with insight into why a player may not be offered a roster spot on a team.
