THE ELITE 16

The ELITE 16

As the SFC Elite Executive Director I oversee the development of all the coaches, players, and teams. A big part of our program is designed to help our coaches help your kids strive to develop as "Complete Players" and for our club to build a high brand of what I call a "Total Soccer" style of playing. To develop "Complete Players" we focus on the 4 areas of a players make up including their technical skills, their tactical decision making, their mentality, and their fitness levels. In our younger SFC Elite ages we want to focus mainly on mastering the soccer ball so we can build a skillful foundation that will allow us to play at the highest level as they grow older. To build this foundation we work with the players to develop a core of dribbling moves we call the "The Elite16".

Attacking Moves:

  1. Shuffle:
Shuffle your feet behind the ball trying the fake the opposing player one way or another, then use the outside of the foot to explode with the ball the other way at a 45 degree angle

  2. Step over / scissors:
Step over the ball from the inside to the outside to fake one way, then use the outside of the other foot to push the ball forward and out to explode the other way

  3. Double step over:
Step over the ball from the inside to the outside twice to fake one way then the other, then use the outside of the other foot to push the ball forward and out to explode the other way

  4. Step over drag:
Step over the ball from the inside to the outside to fake one way, use the inside of the other foot to drag it the same way, explode with the outside of the foot that did the initial step over

  5. Ta Ta Ta:
Inside of foot self pass across body, inside of other foot back across, then push the ball forward and explode

  6. Side ta ta: similar to the Ta Ta Ta but only two touches with the first pass backwards by your side, then push the ball forward with the other foot and explode

  7. Draw cut (Matthews):
Using just one foot draw the ball inside with the inside of the foot (big toe) then cut the ball outside with the outside of the foot (little toe) and explode. This is done quick with body weight on the standing leg the entire time

  8. Fake pull back:
While running, fake a pull back/lift foot above the ball, then push the ball forward and explode

  9. Wind up (yes move):
Wind up and fake a shot or pass then explode with outside of shooting/passing foot)

  10. 101 Freeway:
Quick pass past one side of the defender, and run around the other side and collect the ball behind the defender

 Escape Moves:

  1. Chop:
Outside of the foot next to the ball, lift other leg like a dog, chop with inside of that foot and explode the opposite direction

  2. Hook:
Step over the ball from the outside in so the stepping foot is in front of ball, baby step w/ other foot, chop with outside of stepping foot and explode the opposite direction

  3. Corkscrew:
Step over the ball from the outside in so stepping foot is in front of standing foot, spin opposite way and chop and explode the opposite direction

  4. Pull back:
Step next to the ball, pull the ball back with sole of other foot and explode in the opposite direction

  5. Pull through (Cruyff):
Step with one foot (standing leg) just past the ball, inside of other foot chops the ball sideways through and behind the standing leg

  6. Ballerina (Maradona):
With the sole of one foot tap the top of the ball and while spinning backwards alternate tapping the top of the ball with the sole of other foot and pull the ball back and explode.
